The 2014 BMW 3 Series earns a four out of five for reliability from J.D. Power and Associates. That’s a better score than most cars, particularly the 3 Series’ classmates.

However, stay away from the base model and its cheap interior.
The 3 Series offers a range of potent turbocharged engines, with output ranging from 180 to 300 horsepower in the mainstream models: 320i, 328i, 328d, and 335i. The base 320i’s engine is powerful enough, but the 328i’s turbo-four gives you 60 extra horsepower with little decrease in gas mileage. Depending on the powertrain, expect 20-31 mpg in the city and 30-43 mpg on the highway. The 3 Series maintains its grip through turns with sharp handling. The 3 Series also has a comfortable ride, particularly in the sedan body style. Rear-wheel drive comes standard, and xDrive models have all-wheel drive.

Whether you choose the sedan, Sport Wagon, or Gran Turismo hatchback, the 3 Series has room for five. The seats are comfortable, even for rear-seat passengers. Leatherette upholstery comes standard, but leather seats are available. If you’re not a fan of low-rent interior trim, stay away from the base model, the 320i. There are two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connectors in the rear outboard seats and a tether-only connection in the middle seat.
Standard features include Bluetooth, a USB port, HD Radio, and dual-zone automatic climate control. BMW’s user-friendly iDrive infotainment system is also standard and uses a 6.5-inch display mounted atop the center stack. Some useful add-ons are available, like adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and navigation. While the sedan’s trunk space is good for the class, the Sport Wagon and the Gran Turismo offer more than 50 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded, which is excellent for the segment.
