The 2015 Lexus GS 350 adds a new multimedia system, standard 18-inch wheels and an upgraded Lexus Enform App suite.
The 2015 Lexus GS 350 is a midsize luxury sport sedan available in rear- or all-wheel-drive, and in base or F Sport variants. The four-door Lexus is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 making 306 hp and 277 lb-ft to torque mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is decent for the class at 19/29 mpg city/highway for rear-drive variants and 19/26 mpg with all-wheel-drive. For those looking for a more fuel-efficient model, Lexus also offers the GS 450h and is powered by a 3.5-liter hybrid V-6 with a total system output of 338 hp paired to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). This model is also the most fuel efficient at 29/34 mpg. A high-performance GS F model debuts for the 2016 model year.
Performance is a 2015 GS 350 strong suit, with an excellent suspension setup that makes it one of the best handling cars in its segment. The GS 350’s active rear steering improves its driving dynamics gives it precise turn ins. F Sport models have the best driving dynamics thanks to their larger, staggered width tires, more aggressive suspension tuning, and variable damping system, which keep the car stable through corners. While it isn’t the fastest in its class, the GS 350 has good power for passing and merging as well off the line acceleration.
Build quality is a strong point with a cabin trimmed in high-grade materials such as soft-touch leather throughout the entire cabin. Space inside is also generous plenty of room for four passengers up front and in the rear and a decent 14.3-cubic foot trunk that can be expanded thanks to split-folding seatbacks However, the large center hump limits rear seating to four while the rear suspension cuts into trunk space. The car’s dash has a modern design that makes it one of the best in the segment, and is available with a large 12.3-inch screen when equipped with navigation.
Optional safety aids include blind spot warning, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and Pre-Collision System with Driver Attention Monitor, which detects if the driver is facing away or his/her eyes are closed when there is an obstacle ahead. The system can also warn of an impending collision and apply the brakes before it happens. The 2015 Lexus GS 350 has not been crash tested by the NHTSA. In IIHS evaluations, it earned a Good score in four categories (Good is the highest possible score).
What We Think
Among midsize luxury sedans, the 2015 Lexus GS 350 is the driver’s choice, offering excellent driving dynamics, a well-appointed cabin, and an available hybrid model in the form of the GS 450h. In a comparison test among four midsize luxury sedans, the GS 350 won because it provided the best balance of driver enjoyment and luxury. While it isn’t the quickest in a straight line, we said that the car has superb steering and confident handling, which allow it to hold the road well, and makes it drive smaller than it actually is. Additionally, we noted that the cabin is “inviting” and “the most aesthetically pleasing in its class” with excellent build quality and soft leather throughout the entire cabin. However, in a 2013 First Test review, we noted that the rear seat is only good for two with due to the large center hump cutting into the middle position, and the rear suspension impeding into the car’s trunk.
