Consider the 2022 BMW X4 the more stylish twin brother to the squarer X3 SUV. Its sloping roofline looks slick and wins it more attention, but ultimately it’s a compromised package that's not quite as practical as its sibling. But for those not concerned with tedious things such as maximum cargo capacity, the X4 looks cool and offers all the same fun-to-drive traits that make the X3 one of our favorite BMWs. Two turbocharged powertrains are offered—a four-cylinder and an inline-six—and both come standard with all-wheel drive. The interior, while a bit sober in its design, is comfortable and upscale with plenty of infotainment goodies to satisfy tech dweebs. Looking for even more performance? Updated styling elements mark the 2022 model year for the X4. BMW has tweaked the grille, the bumpers, exterior lighting elements, and wheel designs this year and has reworked the X4's center console. The hot M40i model gains a 48-volt hybrid system and larger 12.3-inch infotainment and gauge displays are now standard
The M40i’s turbocharged inline-six is impressive, but the 30i’s base turbo four-cylinder provides plenty of power. We’d choose that model for its better fuel-economy numbers, and we’d add the Premium package to get niceties such as heated seats, a head-up display, and proximity-key entry.
The base BMW X4 xDrive30i gets its motivation from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. In our time at the track, this model made the sprint from zero to 60 mph in a respectable 6.2 seconds. If you're in the mood for something more high-octane, the X4 M40i will be an ideal fit. This model is equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder that produces a beefy 382 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque. BMW's X4 M40i hustles from zero to 60 mph in a scant 4.2 seconds, according to our track tests, and its engine note is as impressive as its acceleration. Launch control is standard. Both trims come with an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels. Regardless of which X4 you choose, you'll be treated to an SUV that matches keen handling with a ride quality that's easy to live with.
